Polymer synthesis and properties are areas of science dedicated to the research and development of synthetic polymers materials. Polymers are a large class of chemical compounds that are made up of repeating chemical units, or monomers. They are the basis of many products used in everyday life such as plastics, elastomers, rubbers, adhesives, paints, and coatings. The synthesis and properties of polymers are essential to the production of these materials, impacting product performance, composition, integrity, and safety. Polymers are synthesized through various methods, such as addition or condensation polymerization. Addition polymerization consists of forming a chain of monomer units joined together through atmospheric oxygen by a free radical mechanism. This process is commonly used to produce polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. Condensation polymerization involves forming a chain of monomers joined by specific functional groups, such as amides. This technique is used to produce polyamides (like nylon polymers), polyesters (like polyethylene terephthalate), and polycarbonate. In addition to polymerization, scientists also use copolymerization to create different types of polymers. This process combines two or more different monomers to a single polymer chain. Copolymers are formed under specific reaction conditions and can impart unique properties to the polymeric material. The properties of polymers depend on the number, composition, and quality of the monomers used in the synthesis. Drugs, polymers, and plastics will have varying properties based on the number and type of monomer units in the polymer chain. Scientists are researching ways to improve the properties of polymers by expanding the type of monomers used in the synthesis process as well as changing the number and arrangement of the monomers within the polymer chain. Polymer synthesis and properties continue to be the subject of research investigations across a range of industries. Scientists are working to explore further the impacts that polymer properties have on product performance and safety, and improving the synthesis processes of polymers to produce materials with desirable properties.
