Title : Synthesis of novel dye from methyl salicylate: A medicated dye for industrial applications

Abstract:

In Australia, both the textile and chemical industries have encountered substantial challenges and undergone significant changes over the last two decades. This shift is a crucial matter for industrialists, chemists, governmental entities, and other stakeholders within these industries. This paper examines the core processes involved in the production of specific dyes, known as Azo Dyes, which display a wide range of colours derived from a single aniline compound—2,4- dichlorophenyl aniline (acting as the diazo component). This compound was individually reacted with five distinct coupling agents: Phenol, Salicylic acid, 1-Naphthol, Resorcinol, and Aniline under appropriate acidic and basic conditions to form five unique azo dyes. In advancing our studies on dyes in medical applications, a new coupling agent (methyl salicylate) was introduced and compared to the known ones. our product was applied to cellulosic fabrics. The study also reported on the percentage yield, melting point, chromatography, refractive index, and UV-Visible Spectroscopic analysis. The observed bathochromic shifts and increased color intensity in our azo dye can be attributed to the presence of auxochromic groups such as –OH and –COOH, which extend π-electron conjugation with the azo chromophore. The high melting points (170–195 °C), single TLC spots, and yields above 80% observed in our study are characteristic of highly pure, well-crystallized azo compounds. Although our UV–Vis data are summarized qualitatively, the results showed dual absorption bands—one in the UV range (330–430 nm) and another in the visible range (430–730 nm)—with peak positions shifting according to solvent polarity. The synthesized dye displayed good light and wash fastness on cellulosic fabrics. The synthesized dyes are suggested for further exploration in commercial applications.
